Poolesville High School is one of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) sites for the new Center programs, and the first class enters in 2027-28. That is the Grade 8 class applying right now. The deadline for Round 1 is November 6, 2026, so this guide puts every published date in the order families meet it.
Which programs Poolesville hosts
MCPS lists four Center programs at Poolesville. Science, Math, and Computer Science (SMCS) and Humanities are criteria-based, which means a student must meet benchmarks or be qualified by a review committee before entering the lottery. Engineering and Global Ecology and Leadership are interest-based, which means MCPS considers only the interest of the student. A student can apply to up to eight Center programs and rank them in order of interest. Applying is optional.
Before Round 1 closes
- Confirm eligibility. A student must be a Montgomery County resident and be in Grade 8. For SMCS, the student must also be enrolled in, or have completed, Algebra 1 or a higher math class in Grade 8.
- Find your region. Grade 8 students may only apply to Center programs in their region, and the region comes from the home address. The High School Possibility report in ParentVUE lists your options. If the report is not what you expected, MCPS asks families to contact its Department of Consortia and Application Program Services.
- Use ParentVUE. The application opened on Friday evening, October 9, 2026. The High School Possibility form and the Center application can only be reached through ParentVUE, not StudentVUE. Families must opt in to MCPS messages to receive the confirmation email titled "Submission Confirmation of HS CENTER Application".
- Take the PSAT. MCPS gives the PSAT to Grade 8 students on October 14, 2026. For 2026-27 the criteria-based process uses the higher of a student's MAP or PSAT percentile.
- Finish the essays. Applicants to criteria-based programs write two short responses of up to 300 words each. Our guide to the criteria and essays covers them.
- Submit by November 6, 2026. MCPS says changes can be made until midnight that day.
Private school and homeschooled students who live in the county have an extra step. They contact the assigned MCPS middle school registrar to establish residency and get an MCPS student ID and a ParentVUE access code. Transcripts and 7th or 8th grade assessment results are also due by November 6, 2026.

How the two rounds work
Round 1 is in the fall and Round 2 is in the winter. Qualified applicants enter a ranked-choice lottery that uses eligible choices, student rankings, region and open seats. A seat is not assured for every student. Students identified through central review are invited outside the lottery.
If a student has no Round 1 placement, the family can resubmit the same request in Round 2. A student who does have a placement can ask for a higher-ranked program, with no changes to Round 1 rankings. After Round 2, students without a placement go on a numbered waitlist.
A student may accept only one program, and not responding by the February 12, 2027 deadline counts as declining. A student who was not identified as qualified for a criteria-based program can appeal for compelling circumstances. Appeals committees do not review teacher recommendations, outside test results, student work samples or outside clubs.
What MCPS has not published
MCPS pages disagree on the week Round 1 results arrive. One says mid January and another says the last week of January 2027. If you have no results by January 30, 2027, email DCCAPS@mcpsmd.org or call 240-740-7800. The pages we reviewed also give only preliminary, region-wide projections of out-of-area seats, so the exact number of Poolesville seats per program is not stated. No admit rate is published for the new process. Check the school's admissions site and the MCPS Center pages for updates.
What to do this week
Check the ParentVUE confirmation first, then reread both essays out loud and confirm the program ranking matches what your student actually wants.
