Before you enroll

Questions from parents.

Which programs can my student apply to at Poolesville?

Two Poolesville programs are criteria-based: Science, Math, and Computer Science and Humanities. Students must meet MCPS benchmarks, or be qualified by a review committee, before they enter the ranked-choice lottery. Two are interest-based: Engineering and Global Ecology and Leadership. They consider only the interest of the student, who enters the lottery through their ranked choices.

Who can apply to the Poolesville Center programs?

To apply, a student must be a Montgomery County resident and be in Grade 8. Students must be enrolled in, or have completed, Algebra 1 or a higher math class in Grade 8 to be eligible for SMCS. Grade 8 students may only apply to Center programs in their region. Your region comes from your home address, and the High School Possibility report in ParentVUE lists the options. If the report is not what you expected, MCPS asks families to contact its Department of Consortia and Application Program Services.

Is there an entrance exam?

For SMCS, MCPS considers the two essays, the student's program ranking, a PSAT math or MAP-M score (Spring of Grade 7 and Fall of Grade 8), MCAP, Grade 7 and 8 math and science grades (first quarter), the math course, and demographic and student-services data such as FARMS status and IEP, 504 or ELD services. MCPS gives the PSAT to Grade 8 students on October 14, 2026. For 2026-27 the criteria-based process uses the higher of a student's MAP or PSAT percentile, and MAP growth may be considered from Grades 5 to 8.

Does my student need to apply, or is there automatic placement?

For SMCS, MCPS automatically reviews every Grade 8 student in the region, with no application needed. The automatic-seat benchmark is the 99th percentile or higher on math and a 3.8 GPA or higher in Grade 7 and 8 math and science grades. This review is separate from admission, so a student who wants SMCS should still rank it and apply.

Can my student use AI to write the essays?

Applicants to criteria-based programs, which at Poolesville are SMCS and Humanities, complete two brief response essays of up to 300 words each. MCPS says the responses must be the work of the student alone, with no artificial intelligence use.

When do families hear back?

Round 1 results arrive by email and in ParentVUE in January 2027. MCPS pages differ on the week: one says the last week of January and another says mid January. If you have no results by January 30, 2027, email DCCAPS@mcpsmd.org or call 240-740-7800. There are two rounds. Round 1 is in the fall and Round 2 is in the winter. A student without a Round 1 placement can resubmit the same request in Round 2, and a student with a placement can ask for a higher-ranked program, with no changes to Round 1 rankings. After Round 2, students without a placement go on a numbered waitlist.

Does the older magnet process still apply?

MCPS's older Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science Magnet page, which listed the Montgomery County high school clusters that could apply to the county magnet sites, is now marked as archived information for 2025-26 and earlier. Older guides that describe that cluster-based process do not describe this year's application.

Is transportation provided?

MCPS says central stop transportation will be available for Center programs. Families get to the central stop themselves, and route details come in summer 2027. Activity bus information is expected in spring 2027.
